1993
Battery Integration in Electric Vehicles
ZEM’s core team began working on battery integration for electric vehicle propulsion systems. They were responsible for the technology powering Think electric cars, one of Norway’s pioneering initiatives in sustainable mobility.
2009
Founding of ZEM
With a vision to apply their expertise in lithium-ion batteries to new industries, ZEM was founded, focusing on innovative solutions for electric mobility.
2010
Entry into the Maritime Sector and Collaboration with DNV-GL
ZEM’s core team began working on battery integration for electric vehicle propulsion systems. They were responsible for the technology powering Think electric cars, one of Norway’s pioneering initiatives in sustainable mobility.
2012
Joint venture with DNV
DNV invest resources and ZEM train DNV employees in maritime batteries
2016
Vision of the Fjords, "Ship of the Year"
ZEM supplied the battery system for the ferry Vision of the Fjords, awarded "Ship of the Year" at SMM 2016. This 100% electric vessel set a new standard for sustainability in maritime transportation.
2017
ZEM develops the prototype for emergency boats

2018
Future of the Fjords and Pioneering Peak Shaving Solutions
Future of the Fjords was awarded "Ship of the Year 2018", powered by ZEM’s battery systems.
2021
Volvo Penta acquires majority stake in ZEM
The partnership combines ZEM’s deep expertise in marine battery technology with Volvo Penta’s global network and experience in driveline solutions.

Expansion into New Maritime Sectors
ZEM expanded its presence in the maritime industry with new applications:
Supplying batteries for Norsafe's E-GES, an electric lifeboat.
Implementing electric and hybrid power systems in Moen Marin’s fish farming vessels.

Launch of the AKAZEM Battery Line
ZEM introduced its new AKAZEM battery solutions, designed to power a new generation of smaller ships, electric ferries, and hybrid vessels.
